The Tokugawa Shogunate Empire lasted from 1603-1868, and was ruled by many rulers, one of which was the Shogun Ieyasu (pictured on the left). During this period, Japan isolated itself from other civilizations in an attempt to shield itself from the modernizing western world. This was a period in which Confucianism prospered and the government was a feudal system. Edo was the capitol city, which is where modern day Tokyo is located, and it was a place where merchants thrived and became a very wealthy class.
This is the Dutch Japanese Trading Pass issued by The Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was Shogun for a period in the empire. This was a very big deal in the empire because Japan isolated itself from the outside world during this time.
